The Ultimate Back To School Guide For 2020-2021

How to support your immune system and find more focus, energy and vitality every day!

It’s August which means back-to-school is either here or just around the corner. Many families will choose to homeschool their kid(s) and others will work with public or private school environments.

No matter where you are, or which way you are going back to school, it’s a great time to think about how to make the most of every school day to enhance learning and stay healthy.

Going into fall, it’s especially important to support your immune system to help with not only Covid-19 but any and all other viruses, bacteria, and seasonal threats.

Here are 5 ways to keep students healthy, energized and focused!

Sleep

Getting good quality sleep is one of the most important ways you can support you and your child’s educational, health, and wellness goals as we move into fall and back-to-school. It almost seems too simple and yet many people struggle with insomnia and sleep related issues which can lead to poor results in the classroom. 

During the time you are sleeping, your body is essentially healing itself and getting ready for the next day. Getting plenty of high-quality sleep can help you wake up feeling refreshed, help you heal your body and improve your mental outlook.

Facing school can be difficult for some kids and families and getting high quality sleep throughout the household can make a world of difference, both first thing in the morning and throughout the day.

One of the best ways to support your kids’ and family getting good sleep is to stick to a consistent routine each day. Get up, eat meals, get exercise, and go to bed around the same time every day to get the best sleep possible. 

Melatonin, a hormone we naturally produce when it starts to get dark out and signal to our bodies to prepare for sleep, may be something to incorporate short-term to help get you and your kids back on track especially with the extended summer nights still happening.  For kids, 1mg may be all it takes to help them get a little sleepy and encourage an earlier than normal summer bedtime.

Diet

Eating a healthy diet full of fresh fruits and vegetables, whole foods, and a variety of colors will help support learning and education each day. Proper nutrition helps support the body systems that promote brain health along with the ones that support your gut and immune system.

A balanced, healthy diet helps to provide the energy and nutrients required to survive, thrive, and stay healthy. Combining a healthy diet with an active lifestyle has huge benefits for learning, physical health (including strong bones and teeth), and improved mental health along with memory, cognition, and brain health.

A great way to get a bit of extra vitamins, minerals and healthy nutrients is to drink freshly juiced fruits, herbs, and vegetables. Juicing is a healthy and relatively fast way to get your body the vitamins and nutrients that it needs with half the digestive effort. 

Dietary Supplements

Just in case you are not able to eat a healthy diet every day, or just need extra nutritional support, dietary supplements can provide the extra bit of help you need. Combining a healthy diet, along with specific supplements and plenty of water can help to optimize all aspects of wellness. 

If your child is a picky eater, doesn’t eat enough food, has any chronic medical conditions, is on a vegan diet, or drinks a lot of carbonated drinks then a vitamin/supplement routine may be something worth looking into.

Regular physical activity can also improve muscle strength and boost endurance for most activities including indoor and outdoor ones. Exercise delivers oxygen and nutrients to your tissues and helps your cardiovascular system work more efficiently. When your heart and lung health improve, you have more energy to tackle daily activities such as school, sports, and homework.

Stress Reduction

Some stress in our lives can be good, but if it gets out of hand it can have a negative effect on learning and education. While stress around the time of learning is thought to enhance memory formation, thus leading to robust memories, stress markedly impairs memory retrieval, for instance bearing the risk of underachieving at exams.

Stress may even cause students to drop out of school or drop classes in some cases. In fact, the 2010 American College Health Association National College Health Assessment reported more than 25 percent of students say that stress lowered their grades or ability to finish a course.

One of the best ways to reduce stress is to follow the recommendations above for sleep, nutrition, supplements, and exercise. Another one is to incorporate essential oils into your daily routine like those listed below…
