Why Green Foods Can Help Supercharge Your Health

Good for you Greens..

Anyone else feeling a little green?

With St Patrick’s Day, the beginning of Spring, and Spring Break for many…it’s a great month for staying motivated and starting this season off right!

To help us continue to reach those goals we have been working towards, there are many green things we can eat and drink that promote health and well-being. Green foods are full of antioxidants, vitamins, nutrients, and have a ton of other benefits!

Why Green Food's Can Help Supercharge Your Health

Exactly Why Green Foods Are So Good For Your Health

Green foods often have high concentrations of antioxidants that protect our bodies from environmental toxins and other toxins found in processed foods, skincare items, and everyday products that we come in contact with daily. They are also rich in chlorophyll which is a naturally occurring green pigment that helps detoxify your body.

Did you know that chlorophyll is a natural deodorizer that can help with Body Odor and Bad Breath?

Your best source of chlorophyll from foods are going to be rich, green, raw vegetables such as spinach and broccoli. All of your green vegetables are super densely packed with minerals and some of the most essential nutrients: calcium, magnesium, potassium, and vitamins B, C, E, and K. Leafy greens such as spinach and kale are also high in omega-3 fatty acids, like that found in salmon. Omega-3’s are essential for your brain and body’s function and may also help to lower bad cholesterol.

It is important to remember that heat can destroy up to 20% of some vitamins, in particular vitamin C, folic acid, and potassium which is why some nutritionists swear by raw ingredients, believing that uncooked food retains all its nutrients and is therefore the healthiest option.

In some cases, heat can trigger the release of antioxidants, leading some experts to consider cooking a great benefit. Steaming is arguably the healthiest option, with food retaining a much greater percentage of its nutritional make-up than boiling or microwaving.

At the end of the day, it’s great to have a variety of cooking, seasoning, and preparation styles. This gives your food variety and allows you to reap the maximum benefit of all your meals!

Green tea is another fantastic green choice, enjoyed hot or cold, straight, or with honey or lemon. Green tea is rich in polyphenols which have been known to reduce inflammation. It also contains epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) which are natural antioxidants that prevent cell damage and the formation of free radicals in the body.

Green tea also has benefits when it comes to helping with concentration, focus, reaction time, and mood. Did you know it also helps speed up your metabolism, leading to fat burning? Green tea is a great alternative to your morning coffee, I know it’s changed my life!

Okra is low in calories but high in nutrients. It contains Vitamin C which can help protect your immune system while the Vitamin K helps form blood clots. Okra is also high in antioxidants, Vitamin A, and a plant-based protein called lectin which might help to inhibit cancer cell growth. Mucilage—a thick, gel-like substance found in Okra—can bind with cholesterol during digestion so it is passed from the body.

Eating Okra can also help regulate blood sugar and account for 15% of your daily folate needs, which is much desired for pregnant women. If that wasn’t convincing enough, Okra is also packed full of magnesium, Vitamin B6, and has a good amount of protein and fiber.

Artichokes are also a great vegetable that is full of potassium, fiber, Vitamin C, folate, magnesium, and protein. To get its’ full nutritional value, make sure to eat the meaty parts of the leaves as well as the heart.

Kiwis are high in vitamin C, iron, carotenoids, antioxidants, and fiber which provide a variety of health benefits. This tart fruit can support heart health, digestive health, and immune system function. The abundance of Vitamin C has been linked to reduction in asthma symptoms and could also help with eye health and function!

Green grapes are full of fiber, Vitamin C, Vitamin K, thiamine, riboflavin, Vitamin B6, potassium, and manganese. They may help to prevent heart disease, lower blood sugar levels, lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels, and benefit your eye health.

Mint contains fiber, vitamin A, iron, manganese, and folate. The vitamin A in mint helps with eye health and seeing in dimmer lighting. Mint is also just great for reducing upset stomach and symptoms commonly associated with Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Mint can help relieve indigestion and improve your brain function. Mint has physical and aromatherapy benefits as well, truly making it a superfood.

Avocados, one of my favorite foods, are so great I just couldn’t leave them off the list!  Avocados are full of Vitamin K, folate, Vitamin C, potassium, Vitamin B5, Vitamin B6, Vitamin E, healthy fats, protein, and fiber. They also contain small amounts of magnesium, manganese, copper, iron, zinc, phosphorus, Vitamin A, Vitamin B1, Vitamin B2, and Vitamin B3.

While bananas are known as the potassium fruit, avocados actually have a higher concentrations of it. Eating avocados can potentially lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the body.
