The Ultimate Guide To Men’s Health

How to support Men’s Health and Wellness.

Last week we talked about what women need to help live life as their best selves, now let’s talk about men. Most often men don’t think that they need to put their health as a priority in their lives.

There are many reasons why men might not have the energy or the time to care for themselves as they are often busy also caring for others. On average, men smoke and drink more than women, go to their doctors less often, and get fewer preventive screenings. The result? Men tend to die younger and more often from such ailments as heart disease, cancer, and stroke, as well as from injuries…they are often more daring than women.

Self-care and the little things are often what men end up overlooking. Why is that? Men are often told to “rub some dirt on it” or “boys don’t cry” and they don’t end up valuing themselves the way that they should physically and emotionally.

For the longest time men were expected to be the primary breadwinners and keep the family financially stable. Now, women are sharing in that role and financial partnerships are often more equal. Societal “norms” have been shifting for some time and it is now just as important for men to take care of their skin, their physical and mental health, their diets, and their relationships. Life is all about balance.

Helpful Tips To Support Men’s Health

Make Sure You Have a Family Practitioner You Trust

Stay up to date on your health checkups and make an appointment when things don’t feel right. You’re able to do these things easily when you value yourself and your well being.

Many of the health risks that men face are easier to treat if they are detected early. Getting screened for cholesterol, blood pressure, colorectal cancer, diabetes, and prostate cancer are things that should not be stigmatized. Your health is important for your quality of life and for the people who love you and want to see you healthy. Your body has the innate ability to work things out on its own, but knowledge is power so that you can know how to course correct.

Pay Attention To Your Diet & Exercise

Another important aspect of a healthy lifestyle is diet and exercise. I know we’ve heard it a million times before, but nothing beats a life of movement and a well-balanced diet.

Most doctors recommend 30-60 minutes of physical activity at least five days a week. Exercise impacts your energy levels, your muscle health, bone health, and your weight. Lifting at your gym a few times a week is also a great idea. Not for physical image so much as overall muscle mass and a strong, healthy body.

As men get older it can become increasingly difficult to stay active. Try to get as much movement in as possible. Start mountain biking, jogging, playing a team sport; anything that you enjoy doing and keeps you moving.
Increase daily intake of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low fat dairy products, and protein. These are the building blocks to your best self. Do your best to maintain a healthy weight, this looks different for all people but take the time to figure out your body and its optimal size.
Most doctors will also advise to consume alcohol in moderation, cut out cigarette smoking, and eat healthy well-balanced foods to fuel your body. Health truly starts from within. When you realize that, you realize how much power you have when it comes to your food choices impacting your energy and wellbeing.

Get Plenty of High Quality Sleep

Getting plenty of good quality sleep and relaxation becomes even more important as we get older. When we are sleeping, we give our bodies time to recover from our day, so we wake up refreshed and ready for the next day.

Mental Health Matters Too

Taking care of your mental health and well-being is just as important as your physical health. Most men overlook supporting their mental health and they end up suffering in silence. Men have higher rates of suicide than women and they are the ones less likely to speak out.
You might think that you’re able to live with the amount of stress that you’re carrying but not only does it affect you, it affects the people that you love. Getting physical screenings done is vital but seeking trusted care for mental support is just as important.
