Simple Solutions for Improved Mental Clarity and Focus

7 Tips and Tricks to Help You Stay On Track

Are you working from home? Maybe you’re working remotely or trying to be a teacher to your children at home. You could possibly be doing both! During these trying times, we need all the support we can get.

Do you find yourself constantly daydreaming?
Are you unable to tune out distractions?
Do you find yourself always losing track of your progress?

If so, you are not alone!

As we get older, training our brains becomes more and more important. Your age and the amount of sleep you get every night plays a huge role in your overall concentration. If you feel like you’re losing your motivation or get lost in a brain fog sometimes when you sit down to work, let this blog post guide you into concentration and focus.

Mental Clarity

7 Easy Habit and Lifestyle Changes You Can Make to Improve Your Mental Clarity and Focus.

Play games. As simple as this sounds, certain games are fantastic at training and wiring your neural pathways. Spending 1.5 hours a week playing games such as sudoku, crossword puzzles, chess, word searches/scrambles, jigsaw puzzles, and memory games can have a beneficial impact on your concentration, focus, memory, and problem-solving abilities. Our brains retain information better when we are enjoying ourselves, that’s true for children and adults. Games are equally important for teaching children and retaining learned information in older adults.

Nurture a healthy sleeping schedule. We have lots of information available on how to do this and the importance of it. Sleep is everything to us, our brain and body function depends on it. If your sleep schedule is off, then most likely you’ll have a physical reaction, whether that’s a cold, elevated anxiety, or unstable emotions. A lack of sleep also disrupts your concentration, memory, and attention span. Being sleep deprived affects your body in a similar fashion to alcohol. Your reflexes are impaired, your vision is blurred, your emotions are exaggerated, and daily tasks become much more difficult. Get enough high-quality rest and you will see the positive changes in your life very quickly.

Spending time outdoors, being one with nature does wonders for many aspects of your mental health. Try and spend a minimum of 15 minutes a day outside, feeling the sunshine on your skin and breathing in fresh new air. Even having plants in your office space has been shown to increase productivity and a positive mood.

Figure out how to isolate yourself from distractions. This isn’t always possible and sometimes is very difficult but find little ways in which you can rid yourself of distractions. Maybe something as simple as leaving your phone in a different room while you sit down to do work, or your children do their Zoom classes or homework.

Meditation forces you to slow down your thoughts and be present in the moment. Being able to practice this skill will benefit you in many areas of your life. Not only is it a fantastic tool for relaxation, it can help you in tense moments throughout your day. Meditation is great for expanding attention span and being able to bring focus into different areas of your life.

Take a break! You are allowed to be a human being too, not just an employee/student/parent. If you’re stuck writing a paper or you’re getting overwhelmed trying to teach your kid something, take a step away and breathe deeply. Sometimes we over stimulate our brains without even realizing it. Take a break when you feel like you need one; grab a snack, take a walk, or watch a funny video on your phone. Do what you need to do in order to stay grounded.

Do concentration exercises. Sit down with a pen or marker and force yourself to doodle or write for 15 minutes. Doing this not only improves your concentration but also opens up your creativity. Set a timer and think of something you can try for a designated period of time. You’d be surprised how helpful this one is.

Everyone has different things that will work for them. At the end of the day we all have different brains that take in and process information in different ways.

Give any of these options a shot and experiment, see what truly works for you. Make sure to stay optimistic and open minded to trying new things until you land on what works for you. We hope that at least one of these works for you!
