Little Known Secrets to Cooling Down With Essential Oils

This summer has been one of the hottest on record and many people are flat out suffering from too much heat!

Now we all know that there are things you can do to cool down and get a bit of relief from the heat like using a fan, being in air-conditioned spaces, and staying inside during the hottest parts of the day.

There are also some little-known tricks that you might not be aware of, and these can make all the difference in the world!

Are you a fan of natural solutions?

We are, which is why when there are problems that arise, we find natural ways to solve them.

Staying hydrated is one of the best ways to stay cool and keep your body temperatures consistent and all body systems running well.

Eating a healthy diet and getting plenty of exercise will also give you another line of defense when it comes to warding off heat. Our bodies are designed to help us stay regulated and we help optimize these built-in systems when we keep them healthy.

Another amazing way to stay cool in the heat is by using essential oil blends to cool off!

Have you ever put an essential oil blend on your skin and then felt the area turn cool a few minutes later?

This happens because some essential oils contain natural components that are cooling, which means that they activate cold-sensing nerves in the skin.

5 cooling essential oils for relief in hot weather

Peppermint Oil

Essential oils such as peppermint oil have natural cooling properties, which are ideal for making your body feel cooler, The key to this is an organic compound called menthol. Menthol can be found in most mint related products and cools you down by tricking your brain into making you feel cool.

Eucalyptus Oil
If you are particularly sensitive to menthol or just simply do not like mint, eucalyptus oil is an excellent alternative to help keep you cool. As is the case with most essential oils, Eucalyptus oil has multiple benefits as not only can it help regulate your body temperature, but it is also an excellent anti-inflammatory.

Lavender
Most people consider lavender a calming, relaxing essential oil. But it is also capable of cooling both mind and body. If you get a sunburn, put a few drops in a cooling bath to bring your body temperature down. Pair it with eucalyptus, spearmint, and peppermint for an interesting recipe.

Roman Chamomile Oil
Roman chamomile essential oil is a little-known cooling gem. Known for its cooling properties, people have used to Roman chamomile for millennia and recent laboratory studies have even shown its potential to kill bacteria, fungus, and viruses making it a safe and gentle alternative for mild skin inflammation, like soothing that sunburn.

Sandalwood
Sandalwood oil has long been prized in India — and we know it gets hot there — for its cooling, calming qualities. With a woody, earthy, and ancient scent it offers a more savory and subtle alternative to the floral qualities of Lavender. It is also gentler to the skin than Peppermint.

Now, for any of these oils, make sure you don’t apply them directly to your skin! They are best diluted with a carrier oil like Fractionated Coconut Oil. For example, in low concentrations menthol feels blissfully cooling (as we’ve discussed above), but at high concentrations that cool sensation becomes hot and uncomfortable.

You can use any of these oils simply by adding them to a roller bottle and diluting them with a carrier oil or adding them to a spray bottle with water and/or other ingredients.

Most people will put 10-20 drops of essential oil into a 5 or 10ml roller bottle and fill the rest of the bottle with a carrier oil. You can use Fractionated Coconut Oil, Grapeseed Oil, Hemp Oil, Almond Oil, or any other that works with your skin type.
