How To Be A More Efficient Grocery Shopper

Food delivery services thrived during the COVID shutdowns, made meals easy to get and helped to support restaurants while things were generally closed to the public. While this is a great problem solver and helps with many convenience factors, it is not necessarily the most budget friendly food option.

In this blog post I want to talk to you about how you can conquer the grocery store and have it be as stress free as possible, like picking up your phone to use DoorDash no matter what the circumstances are.

7 Ways To Stay On Budget and Be More Efficient With Your Shopping

1. One of the best tips I can offer is to be prepared before you even enter the grocery store. Having a specific list, or at least general guidelines for what you hope to buy, is a great way to mentally prepare your grocery shopping experience and to eliminate extraneous spending.

If you frequent the same store, writing your list in the order that you find your food can help more than you think. For example, if you walk through the fresh produce first every time, try and keep all produce written in the same part of your list.

2. Another way to ensure that you’re buying what you need, when you need it, is to loosely plan a week’s worth of meals and try to only buy what you need to cook specific meals. Of course, you’ve got your staple pantry items, snacks, condiments, etc., but when you stick to a more regimented format of grocery shopping, you’re less likely to buy things that you don’t need and stay away from impulse purchases.

Another added benefit of shopping this way is that it makes it easy to create consistent meals, which further helps you to stay away from food delivery services. Simple, convenient cooking is the way to go! 3. Don’t go to the grocery store hungry. This tip can save you so much money! One too many times I’ve made the mistake of going to the grocery store with a rumbling stomach, or even worse, after the gym and while hungry. This combination is guaranteed to have you coming home with an extra grocery bag or two, probably filled with snack foods and without key ingredients to make a meal.
The best times to go grocery shopping are when you have a full stomach, are in a good mood, and know exactly what you need to purchase.
4. The best times to go to the store are first thing in the morning or in the middle of a workday. For many people those aren’t always practical times to shop, but if you can avoid Sunday afternoons you should pretty much be in the clear. The busier it is, the more difficult to be efficient. Fun Fact: Sunday afternoons are typically the busiest time to go grocery shopping almost nationwide. This is when you’ll have your crowd headed home from church, people on their way into town from trips, or people gearing up to entertain for a football game.
5. Utilize bulk shopping options when you can. Winco and Costco can be great for this, but some small local grocery stores will also have bulk purchasing sections available within them, so check them out and support local when you can. If you have a large family, or you tend to eat a lot of the same foods on a daily basis, bulk shopping can save you quite a bit of money and time spent grocery shopping as well. You’d be surprised how many things get marked up at the store because they have a name brand on them, while the same items in bulk are a fraction of the price. The other great thing is buying in bulk sometimes allows you to use your own containers to fill up, which cuts down on waste.  6. Always keep your essentials around that you can fall back on. If you know that a quick stir fry is going to satisfy a craving, try and keep rice and veggies on hand most of the time. Also having some noodles and a few varieties of sauces available, this way you can customize a pasta, stir fry, and anything in between no matter what you have in your house. This is also a good money saver, especially when you can buy items like rice in bulk for discounted prices. A good PB&J never hurt anyone or my favorite almond butter and honey if you want something a little different. 7. If you skip meat for a few nights a week you will see your grocery bill drop significantly. Not only is meat and seafood sold at grocery stores marked up in price, but it’s never as fresh as you hope it is, compared to a butcher shop or farm fresh – so check out your local farmers market if you want some local fresh cuts. Also considering the health benefits of cutting back on meat, it’s easy to make a few days a week plant based!

At the end of the day, we all grocery shop differently but there are definitely some things to keep in mind that will help you use your time and your money as efficiently as possible.
