Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Motivation

How to get motivated and maintain your focus!

Did you know that your multitasking might actually be the reason you lose motivation and can’t seem to finish everything you want to? Motivation is a tricky beast. It’s never around when you need it and seems to stay so fleetingly.

How do we harness motivation not only for ourselves, but for those around us?

Let’s Get Motivated (and keep it going!)

Maintaining Motivation

The ability to motivate yourself and stay motivated is crucial for most aspects of your life. The easiest way to stay motivated is to know what motivates you. The more that you know and understand yourself, the more effective your efforts will be to find motivation and stay motivated. This may sound simple, but we all have different factors that determine motivation. Some of us are going to be more motivated by a raise than a companywide party for a job well done.

Enthusiasm is contagious, this is important to remember when motivating people around you. When you wake up in the morning, set goals and be intentional about how you want your day to go, it will be easier to stay motivated when at the end of the day you can see the progress you have made.

To truly motivate yourself long term, you need to know your WHY!  Define the goal you’re working towards and create a clear vision of how to get there.

Keep yourself in a positive mindset and find new ways to approach and tackle your goals. We all have goals; we all have different ways of getting there too. Have you ever really taken the time to right down your goals, large and small to accomplish today or in the future? When you see your goals listed out it is easier to stay purposeful with your time.

One of the best ways to get started goal-making is to start now. If you tend to push tasks onto the tomorrow version of yourself, quit that habit as soon as you can. The best way to begin something is just to begin, not begin “tomorrow.”

Another trick for staying motivated is called “chunking.” This is the practice of taking daunting tasks and breaking them up into more reasonable pieces to work with. When you break down your goals into manageable pieces and get organized, you cut the mental workload in half. If you have a calm environment mentally and your workspace is clean, you increase the likelihood of success. Another benefit of chunking is that when we accomplish a set of tasks it raises our self-esteem and shows us that we can achieve our goals.

For example, no one has ever sat down to write an entire novel, start to finish. You sit down, write the first chapter or maybe just the introduction paragraph to get things started. This way, an entire book doesn’t seem as scary and unrealistic.

Positive Reinforcement to Stay Motivated

Positive reinforcement is another incredible way to stay motivated and check the boxes on your to-do list. Although you may think that this method only applies to children, you’d be wrong. Even as adults we need to be told, “You are doing a great job!”

This is especially truly regarding how our brain interprets and responds to rewards. Remember to reward yourself as you achieve the smaller bite size portions of your larger goal, it will make it easier to stay motivated having little celebrations along the way, rather than having to wait until it is fully complete to feel accomplished.

Remember that specific goals are much easier to stick to than abstract ideas. Saying that you want to “be the best version of yourself” is great, but what does that really mean? Instead, say that you want to “Walk or run one mile everyday.” This way you have a concrete ambition, a solid goal that you can work towards.

Focus on the elements of your goal that you truly enjoy and expand on those. Extrinsic motivation alone hardly works long term, find what makes you tick and watch the results.

Keeping Others Motivated

When it comes to motivating others, take the time to listen to them. When people feel appreciated, respected, and heard incredible things can happen.

If you’re a boss or manager trying to motivate your staff, give them quality time, ask them open ended questions, and listen to what they have to say. When your employees talk to you, encourage them and prompt them to share how they feel. This not only creates an open dialogue; it allows them to share with you how they need to be motivated.

Effective self-motivation is what sets highly successful people apart from others, they found a way to flip the switch of internal motivation. This is a learned skill for most, so don’t worry if you aren’t quite there yet.
