Enjoy Treating Your Skin With Some Love…

Taking care of our skin helps us to look young and healthy is easy with this basic skincare routine that will work for anyone. It can help you prevent health issues related to skin such as melanoma, so where do we start?

There are a million different products available to us and knowing what to use can feel overwhelming. Which is why we put together this simple guide, breaking down the steps you should have in your routine along with organic, clean, eco friendly skincare products that we carry here at Simply Nutrition.

Quick note that face masks are part of a skincare routine but you don’t use masks daily so they won’t be talked about in this post. But using a face mask 1-2x per week is another great part of taking care of your skin!

Step 1 – The first step to any skincare routine is to cleanse your skin.

If you’re someone who wears makeup, you’ll first need to take a makeup remover or cleansing oil to break down the makeup on your skin.

Morning and night, rinse your face with water and rub a small amount of cleanser between clean palms. Massage face wash all over your face using gentle pressure. Rinse your hands and massage your face with water to rinse your face until you’ve removed the cleanser and grime. Gently pat your face dry with a soft towel.

This cleansing oil from Mad Hippie is great, and works like a charm. After you remove your makeup, it’s time to cleanse again. Makeup is stubborn and part of it stays behind even after a first cleanse which is why the double cleanse is so important.

What you use to cleanse your face varies based on your skin type. If you have oily/acne prone skin it is best to use a gel cleanser like this one from Sukin. If your skin is on the dry side, using a cream or milk cleanser like this cream cleanser from Sukin or this one from EvanHealy. If you have sensitive/combination skin then you should be using a light calming formulated cleanser like this one from Sukin or this foaming one from Sukin.

Step 2 – After cleansing, the next step is to use a toner.

Apply after cleansing your face and before everything else. Pour a few drops of toner into your palms or a cotton pad and gently swipe onto your face. If your toner is exfoliating—meaning that it removes dead skin cells with ingredients like glycolic acid—use only at night. Hydrating formulas can be used twice a day.

Do not use exfoliating toner and retinoids or other exfoliators at the same time. We carry both hydrating toners and exfoliating toners and both are great to use, and also depend on your skin type!

This rosewater isn’t technically a toner but acts as an extra layer of moisture after cleansing your skin. Ideal for those with dryer skin types. This lavender toner from EvanHealy is light and gentle, perfect for sensitive and reactive skin. This Rose and Geranium toner from EvanHealy is perfect for any skin types but especially for hormonal skin/acne prone skin. This toner from Mad Hippie uses Vitamin C and Hyaluronic Acid and works for all skin types. This toner from Andalou is great for those struggling with acne/unbalanced skin pH and works for all skin types.

Step 3 – The next step in your skincare routine is to apply your serums.

Morning is a great time to use a serum with antioxidants—like a brightening vitamin C serum—because they protect your skin from free radicals you’ll encounter throughout the day.

Nighttime is a good time to use a moisturizing serum with hyaluronic acid, which keeps your skin from drying out at night, especially if you’re using anti-aging or acne treatments that can irritate and dry out the skin.

Serums can also contain exfoliants such as alpha-hydroxy acids (AHA) or lactic acid. Whatever you’re using, always remember: Water-based serums should go underneath moisturizer; oil-based serums should be applied after moisturizer.

If you’re looking for a good, clean Vitamin C serum to protect against free radicals then this one from Mad Hippie is just for you! Mad Hippie also makes a lovely Vitamin A serum that works at stimulating your skin, which increases collagen and reduces wrinkles and signs of aging. We also love this Sea Algae Serum from EvanHealy which helps to firm skin, and get rid of wrinkles and fine lines.

Step 4 – The next step is to apply eye cream.

A lot of face moisturizers work under the eyes, but sometimes getting a specialized formula for under your eyes can be a lot more effective. You can apply regular moisturizer to your under-eye area, but if you decide to use a specialized eye cream, you’ll typically want to layer it underneath moisturizer, since eye creams tend to be thinner than face moisturizers.

Try using an eye cream with a metal roller-ball applicator and storing it in the fridge to counteract puffiness in the morning. Using a hydrating eye cream at night can cause fluid retention that makes eyes look puffy in the morning.

This wild carrot eye balm from EvanHealy is convenient to use in its chapstick like applicator and the combination of wild carrot seed oil and shea butter creates a soothing, moisturizing layer for your sensitive under eye area. We also really love this eye cream from Mad Hippie that has over 15 active ingredients all dedicated to improving the look and feeling of your under eyes.

Step 5 – The next step and one of the most important steps, is to moisturize.

Moisturizer both hydrates skin and locks in all the other layers of product you’ve applied. Look for a lightweight lotion for the morning, ideally with SPF 30 or higher. In the evening, you can use a thicker night cream. Those with dry skin may want to use a cream morning and night.

For those with sensitive skin this sensitive moisturizer from Sukin is formulated without essential oils, just butters and vitamins to moisturize and hydrate your skin. This face cream from Mad Hippie is packed full of antioxidants and peptides, leaving your skin soft and rejuvenated. This Happy Day Cream from Andalou is lightweight but full of moisturizing ingredients and Hemp Stem Cells to counteract pollution and oxidative damage and is perfect to apply in the morning. This is another great daytime moisturizer from Andalou formulated with rose stem cells, pomegranate, hyaluronic acid and aloe vera.

For heavier, thicker, night time moisturizers we have this Triple C night cream with reishi, turmeric and cloudberry for nourishment. Another great overnight moisture boosting cream is this one from Andalou, it contains resveratrol CoQ10 and goji glycopeptides to smooth and soften skin and promote inner glow. Another favorite is this Ultra Hydrating Cream from Trilogy containing manuka honey and lavender for a soothing, replenishing moisture level on your skin.

Step 6 – Next step is to apply face oil.

If you use a face oil, make sure to apply it after your other skin-care products since nothing else will be able to penetrate the oil. We really love and recommend this antioxidant facial oil from Mad Hippie because of its clean ingredients and skin protection and extra moisture it provides.

Step 7 – The final and arguably one of the most important steps of your skincare routine is your SPF.

It may be the last step, but nearly any dermatologist will tell you that sun protection is the most important part of any skin-care regimen. Protecting your skin from UV rays can prevent skin cancer and signs of aging.

If your moisturizer doesn’t contain SPF, you still need to wear sunscreen. For chemical sunscreens, wait 20 minutes before going outside for the sunscreen to be effective. Look for broad-spectrum SPF, meaning that your sunscreen protects from both UVA and UVB radiation.

Our top three picks for sunscreen are this hydrating SPF from Mad Hippie that uses zinc, carrot seed oil, avocado oil and red raspberry seed oil. This Daily Defense SPF from Andalou is great for dry skin and uses fruit stem cell complex and resveratrol CoQ10 and super antioxidants. We also really love this Sun Buddy SPF from Andalou  that contains CannaCell® hemp stem cells, organic hemp seed oil, and pure plant essential oils for a complexion that glows. Made with bioavailable vegan ingredients to be gentle and effective for all skin types.

At the end of the day, the most important/essential steps to have healthy and clean skin are to cleanse, moisturize and protect against the sun. Everything else is fun layers added in that boost the routine as a whole. Try new things and figure out what works best for your skin!
