7 Tips and Tricks for Aging Gracefully
Aging gracefully doesn’t mean aging like a McDonalds meal, something that looks no different 10 years later. Aging gracefully means aging like a bottle of wine, where your age only adds to your value and everything that you are.
What does it mean to age gracefully and is it a bad thing?
The idea that you have to hold onto your youth forever to be worthy of love or deemed attractive is damaging to women all over the world. Aging gracefully doesn’t mean spending every day at a new doctor’s office to avoid wrinkles, it means growing into yourself and your natural beauty everyday, no matter your age.
If you are looking for ways to grow into yourself, to embrace your age and everything that comes with that, then this blog post is perfect for you.
- Move your body. Movement is essential for all health and wellness, a stagnant body is prone to a variety of diseases and ailments.
You don’t have to be lifting heavy weights everyday or running marathons to be healthy. What you do need to do is keep yourself active. Staying active is defying the aging process, you’re not letting yourself become sedentary and losing your passion for life.
When you move your body, you feel good and you create healthy habits around exercise. Looking at exercise and movement through a lens of “I need to do this to lose weight” or “I have to do ‘x’ amount of working out to be attractive” make movement seem inorganic and not actually productive.
Move your body for yourself, remind yourself what it means to be alive and why you are here. To truly feel motivated, find an exercise you love to do or a hobby that keeps you active and do it because you want to.
2. Treat your skin well. Your skin is the largest organ you have and its health is essential for aging well.
There are many things you can do to take care of your skin including but not limited to: wearing natural sunscreen year round, cleansing and moisturizing your face at the end of the day, staying hydrated, limiting unhealthy foods with high sugar or fat content, limiting your consumption of alcohol and cigarettes, and using high quality organic/natural skincare products.
If you love your skin, it will love you back!
3. Eat high quality food. It is totally fine to enjoy your red wine, pizza, candy bars, and chips on occasion…we all want to enjoy our lives right?
Just keep in mind that what you put into your body fuels everything that you do and plays a large role in both physical and mental health. When you make a consistent effort at incorporating fruits, vegetables, healthy fats, whole grains, herbs, and water into your diet you ensure that you’re putting the best fuel possible into your body.
A healthy balance of foods will provide you with optimal physical and mental health, especially when you have a good routine established with exercise.
4. Embrace what aging is. There is a lot of push to hold onto youth with everything you’ve got, and not nearly enough push to embrace the beauty of growing older.
Your grey and silver hairs are gorgeous and shouldn’t be covered up with hair dye or by wearing more hats. Your wrinkles show wisdom and experience gained and you should feel proud of them.
There is nothing ugly or unfortunate about growing older and we all do ourselves a disservice by believing that’s the case. Aging is inevitable and learning to embrace that will make a huge difference in your life.
5. Value your sleep. Getting enough sleep benefits mental, emotional, and physical health, as well as helping your skin stay blemish free.
Getting an adequate amount of sleep every night is linked to: lower risk of heart disease and stroke, reduced stress, reduced depression and anxiety, lowered risk of obesity, reduced inflammation and improved focus, concentration, and mood.
Sleeping is your body’s time to rest and recover, which only becomes more important as we get older. A regular sleep schedule is an important part of any self-care routine.
6. Take your mental health seriously. A tree doesn’t bear fruit all year, so why should we?
“Even trees know that there’s an offseason, I decided to put myself first. I learned how to say no.” This advice comes from Camryn Bruno, speaking at Generation Women.
There is a lot of pressure to put other people before ourselves, to break our backs for their happiness while ignoring our own. Not only is this damaging to you, it promotes stress, which makes the aging process accelerate and makes it less enjoyable.
Learn how to communicate and advocate for yourself.
7. Keep learning. One of the best things in terms of aging is to keep your brain active and learning.
Whether that might be through classes, hobbies, games, or a combination of those things…don’t stop learning. There are many ways to make learning a social practice as well, which helps with mental health.
There are countless resources available online, in community centers, through apps, and even free college courses that can be accessed by anyone. You may also find it fun and educational to stay up to date on podcasts or documentaries or books so that you have a pretty good consistency of information to keep your brain active.
Lifelong health and wellness will help you age gracefully no matter what age you are.
