Making Daily Self Care A Priority

How to set up and consistently follow a healthy self-care routine all 365 days a year!

The term self-care has been tossed around a lot and has become very popular on social media. The idea of self-care is critical to keep in mind, especially when the world around us is in varying stages of craziness.

Implementing a self-care routine can seem intimidating or difficult, however this blog post will hopefully eliminate some of that stress. The first and most crucial step to this process is getting rid of the idea that there is a certain/correct/only way to achieve a self-care routine. That couldn’t be further from the truth, self-care is unique to every individual human being and that is what makes it such a wonderful thing!

Here Are Some Easy To Follow Self Care Strategies

Setting boundaries is a large part of self-care, but I don’t think it is talked about nearly as much as it should be. As people we have many relationships, with work, school, family, friends, romantic partners, etc. In these relationships, it is essential that you learn where your boundaries are and how to maintain them. It can be as simple as telling your friend when they try and make plans with you when you are burnt out, “Thank you for inviting me out, but I had a long day and really need some alone time tonight.” There are many ways to set boundaries with the people in your life and doing this leads to healthier relationships.

Journaling is a great way to get in-tune with your creative side and to also release stored emotions. When you put pen to paper, or type, or use crayons to express yourself through the written word, you open your mind and your heart. The amount of stress we go through daily may not be that noticeable until it has accumulated. Often, I think we discount these types of exercises as childish or not worth our time when nothing could be further from the truth.

Nourishing your body is everything from eating your fruits and vegetables, having a skin care routine, drinking lots of water, finding a form of exercise/movement that you enjoy… it really is the root of all self-care. Giving your body love and support, encourages healthy habits. If you don’t know where to start, identify what makes you feel good. Again, this will be different for everyone. One of the best parts of being human, is being different. Do you like to dance or sing, do you enjoy carrots over cucumbers, do you like painting or poetry better? There is no right or wrong answer, and that is the best part.

Connecting with nature is highly underrated. I know I’m not alone when I say that I find myself swept up in technology a lot more often than I should be. I sometimes forget how good it feels to put my toes in the dirt and breathe in the lush air outside. We all live in different climates but no matter where you are, there is always something beautiful in nature to appreciate. Maybe your town has the best hiking trails, or you’re lucky and have easy access to the ocean or mountains. Even in urban cities, there are parks and trees and birds and moments of Creation to admire and take in. Seeing the color green has also been proven to promote relaxation and make us feel similarly to sitting in the sunshine.

Creating can be done in many formats, and at the end of the day you just have to find what works for you. Sew, paint, weld, bake, crochet, sculpt, choreograph, song writing, movie making etc. The world is full of possibilities, it’s about finding where your passions line up with the materials at hand. Almost all skills can be learned, decide what is worth your time and effort, and what is not, then go for it! What do you like to create? Are you drawn to one medium more than another?

Finding moments of stillness is on the other side of creating. Finding stillness is one of the best ways that we honor ourselves. Silence truly is good for us, to find moments of time when we aren’t being asked questions, or given information, or being asked to be a part of a conversation. Take these moments to reflect inwards, to check in with your emotions and how your body feels physically.

Taking “time out” to maintain self-care has several benefits.

Did you know that most people are more resilient and able to handle life’s stress when they are feeling their best both physically and emotionally? A massage, a hot bath, or another form of pampering revitalizes you inside and out.

Here are the top 6 ways self-care can improve your quality of life:

  • May Boost Physical Health
  • Can Improve Emotional Health
  • Makes You a Better Caregiver
  • Provides a Break from Stress
  • Offers Time Alone
  • Generates Soothing Feelings

Once you’ve decided it’s time to start nurturing yourself and your body, be sure to plan time each day for this. Try to schedule an amount of time each day where you won’t be interrupted. This is important to help you maintain consistency and develop good routines.
